I’ve shown my friend Ghandi here, and that’s me in the overalls.

The Canoe

My friend Jeff Miller called me one spring morning. Jeff is a painter, a thinker, and a guide in Algonquin Park.

“Rodney!” says Jeff, real loud as if we were both deaf—which we are—”Rodney, I was thinking, how come there isn’t a whirligig of someone canoeing? You know, I don’t know why there isn’t a whirligig of a canoer! Make one, dammit!”

“Right!” I holler back. “You’re right, how come there isn’t a whirligig of someone canoeing? I’ll make one!”

I did a few scribbles to get the idea going and made this whirligig.

You might notice that the woodwork and painting on this piece is kinda rugged. That’s because I want to show you that although neat finishing is good, and has its reasons, it is not essential for a crazy machine blowing in the wind.

Good finishing has its reasons? What reasons? Here’s one—when you have a dent or badly applied paint, water will nestle there, go through the paint, and eventually rot your piece.

This simple whirligig is built on two strips of wood that are supported by a vertical piece. The flag and the waves swing the propellor into the wind.
